>> What's cracking, I'm Brian Tong and welcome to the Apple Byte. We're bringing you all the good and the bad inside of Apple, so let's get to it. Now could new Apple goodies be on the horizon? Well, Apple is telling its resellers the supply of iMacs will be tight in the immediate future. With the product this late in its life cycle, it's pretty much a given that new models are coming soon, so all of you that were disappointed at Macworld, just hold on to your butts. Now there's also other treats Apple's been baking. An analytic software tool by Pinch Media has detected iPhone 2,1 devices in the wild. So what does that really mean? Well, the first iPhone was identified as iPhone 1,1. The iPhone 3G is 1,2. And if Apple holds true their naming of devices, the 2,1 version of their smartphone would be a major change sporting a new processor or system chip-set. Now take this info however you want, but MacRumor says Apple is considering switching their stands to allow apps to run in the background. So with new iPhone hardware that has more power to run multiple apps, it's something we hope they do especially if they want to keep up with the Palm 3. But guys, don't get too giddy because the iPhone's life cycle is about a year and we're not even close to June. Now do you all like Emoji, well you will after you check out this Quick tip. If you have an iPhone and you like emoticons, you know all those fun, smiley faces, then this Quick Tip is for you. First stop, make sure you're running the iPhone 2.2 firmware. Go to the app store, find Frosty Place and install it. It's a Chinese RSS reader, but there's more to it. Now open the app and just a play around with it for a few moments. Now once you do that exit the app and go into your settings, select general and scroll down to find the keyboard. Then select international keyboards and you'll see a long list of languages, but find Japanese and press on it. From there you should see the word Emoji, so switch that to On. Now you guys are ready to roll. So lets jump into a text message and you have a glow button next to the space bar representing international keyboards, press on that and you'll have a huge collection of Emoji icons that you can use in your text messages or e-mails. We're talking animals, food and even smiling stacks of poop. It's the Japanese, you name it, they got it. I'm Brian Tong for CNET.com with a Quick Tip of the day, use it wisely. Oh that guy, still one of my favorites at CNET. Okay, now a quick thing, the Emoji icon feature works if you install it before you run the 2.2,1 firmware update and it will still work after you run the update, but if you guys already have the 2.2,1 firmware, you're kind of out of luck. >> Air Mouse replaces your keyboard and mouse so you can control the computer remotely. It works by creating a local wireless network with your computer and your iPhone. First you'll need the software to create the server. You can download Air Mouse server for Windows or Mac free from Download.com. After you get the server app installed start up Air Mouse on the iPhone. There are two ways to control the screen. The first and easiest way is with the touch pad mode, which lets your finger stand in for the mouse. If the keyboard gets in the way, shake once to make it disappear and again to recall it. You can also use landscape mode, which supports multi-touch in addition to virtual mouse keys. The second way to control the Air Mouse app is really similar to a hardware Air Mouse. It takes a little bit of practice to master especially because you need to move your arm in an arc. You'll notice that the keyboard has common buttons like Ctrl, Alt and the Windows or Mac button, but if you press another button on the screen you'll also be able to see a control pad for the function buttons, home, delete and so on. There are also four free keys so you can program to launch useful applications like iTunes for instance. But there's also a control panel for your browser which is equipped with basic navigation buttons and a control panel for your media player.
