>> Donald: Hey, I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for Digital Audio and MP3 and today we're taking a first look at the Yamaha Pocket Track CX. This is a hand-held digital audio recorder that costs around $300 and records high quality stereo audio directly to wave or MP3 files. The recordings are stored on micro SD cards and you can transfer them over to your computer using USB. Now when you're looking at price and features the Pocket Track doesn't have a lot of advantages over competitors like the $200 Zoom H2 or the $350 Zoom H4N but it does deliver terrific sound quality for its size and some people will really appreciate the point and shoot simplicity of the recorder. On the front you've got this postage stamp size screen and buttons for record, stop and play. Under that there's a little 4 way direction pad for skipping tracks and adjusting volume and jumping into the menu. On the sides there's buttons for editing and deleting files and adjusting the microphone gain and there's also headphone jack and external mic inputs. Most people though are probably going to use the built-in microphone. Overall this is a great recorder for people who want awesome sound quality with a minimum of fuss. But people who really like nerding out with compression settings and external microphones will probably want to look elsewhere. For CNET.com I'm Donald Bell and that was a first look at the Yamaha Pocket Track CX. ^M00:01:21 [ Music ]

Transcend Digital Album (20GB)
Poor battery life and a thin set of features makes this photo viewer with a built-in MP3 player a secondary choice.
The Zoom H4n is a mobile recording dynamo with features that outperform competitors at twice the price. It's an outstanding value for musicians and podcasters who demand professional-sounding results.
Yamaha Pocketrak CX Review
The good: The Yamaha Pocketrak CX handheld recorder is slim and sleek, uses a replaceable rechargeable battery, and captures pristine audio with its high-quality built-in microphones.
The bad: The slender design of the Pocketrak CX doesn't allow for larger external mic connections; the use of microSD memory limits storage capacity; and there are only a few advanced settings.
The bottom line: The Pocketrak CX is a great choice for solo musicians and bands that need a no-nonsense recorder with quality built-in mics, but its features may be too basic for demanding users.
