Welcome to CNET Top 5, where each time we meet we count down another hot CNET list. I'm Tom Merritt. Our folks at CNET download wade through a lot of software in order to bring you the best free spyware-free downloads. That means poor Peter Butler and friends must suffer through some pretty shameful apps. So, let's count down 'em down. Presenting, the Top 5 worst downloads. At Number Five: Terrible Halloween screen saver. Well, points for honesty. A blocky, brownish, apparent demon paces between a caged angel and a burning skeleton. Oh, and I almost forgot the green, goo-spewing jack-o-lantern. As Pete Butler says, "If you think you need to see it to believe it...you don't." Coming in at Number Four: Znow desktop decor. As pleather is to leather, znow is to snow. Hard to explain. Let's just say it would be good for fooling friends and family into thinking they have a virus--just activate the water drops effect. My screen! It's melting! Up to Number Three: Canadian Rock Radio. When I saw this made the list I said, "Really Peter?" You're going to hate on our brothers and sisters to the north? He responded Rush...Triump...Chilliwack! Not realizing that just made my mouth water for back-bacon. Sliding in at Number Two: Presidential election screen savers. I think our dear Peter has watched a little too much CNN. He's pretty darn sick of seeing these candidates faces and certainly doesn't want them on his PC. I say probably about half of you hate one of these and half of you hate the other. Before we get to Number One, let's rinse your mind clean with the Top 5 most popular downloads. You love a free antivirus program. All right. Let's get to our Number One, the worst download Peter could find in the past three months. At Number One, it's...Alien Communicator. Pretty simple, really. It translates alien psycho-kinetic control of the random number-generation capability of a PC into readable letters. You know what our test told me those numbers are saying? "KILL ALL HUMANS." Figured it would be that or "eat all humans." I mean seriously. Why else would they hide their bald-faced announcement of their evil intentions so cleverly? Well, that's it for this edition of CNET Top 5. You can find the best downloads...as well as these...at CNET's download section, download.com. I'm Tom Merritt. See you next time.
