2005 Wiener Dog Nationals

We had The Wiener Dog Nationals circled on our calendar. Held at the Phoenix Greyhound Park (third annual), it?s an event in which dachshunds compete in ?races? to benefit Arizona Adopt a Greyhound. Last year, I had a lot of pictures on a former blog, but tonight the videos will do it even greater justice. It?s fun to watch these crazy-legged little animals run their hearts out. We were introduced to the event last year when my wife met the owner of Squirt (her name is J.D. Ecker) outside a supermarket. She was raising money for her guy to race and that led us to head down to the park. In this video montage, Squirt is the sweet dachshund who is wearing a hot dog bun. He?s difficult to miss. The timing was a little off as the monsoon rains came shortly after the first heat. The races are interspersed throughout the night between the greyhound heats. I will not watch the "real" dog races; the concept gives me the willies.

"Bad Santa" trailer

Hollywood favorites Billy Bob Thornton, Bernie Mac, and John Ritter star in the comedy hit, "Bad Santa". You'd better watch out -- Santa Claus Willie T. Stokes (Thornton) is coming to town and he doesn't care if you've been naughty or nice. Willie's favorite holiday tradition is to fill his sacks with loot lifted from shopping malls across the country. But this year his plot gets derailed by a wisecracking store detective (Mac), a sexy bartender (Lauren Graham, from TV's Gilmore Girls), and a kid who's convinced Willie is the real Santa Claus. Directed by Terry Zwigoff (who also directed "Ghost World" and "Crumb").

Kelly Willis: "Teddy Boys"

As Kelly Willis planned to go into the studio last fall, she really didn't know what to expect. She had spent the four years since co-producing her 2002 album, the lovely, laid-back Easy, on family matters: her oldest son Deral, born in 2001, got three siblings -- twins Abby and Ben born in 2004 and baby Joseph, whose birth followed in early 2006. "This time around, I had absolutely no time or energy to be involved in the producer role at all," Willis recalls. So she called a guy "who lives and breathes music," whose instincts she loved and who she felt "really comfortable around": Chuck Prophet, the edgy singer-songwriter who contributed guitar to both Easy and 1999's acclaimed What I Deserve. Together, they would create the most sonically adventurous album of Kelly Willis' seventeen-plus-year recording career, "Translated From Love."

21 Clipz: "Soldier"

The first music video from Jane-Finch.com..."Soldier" is the first video collaboration between director Paul Nguyen and rapper Chuckie Akenz. The video was shot on Thursday, March 25, 2004. The walking scene was filmed along Yewtree Blvd and Driftwood Ave. "Soldier" was actually made as a school project for York University professor John McCullough. Due to the tremendous feedback and response Paul Nguyen received, "Soldier" was uploaded online to Jane-Finch.com and started a new generation of rap video productions.

Daft Punk: "Harder Better Faster Stronger"

The first single from the album will be a live version of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" from Daft Punk's 2001 album Discovery, accompanied with a video directed by Olivier Gondry (older brother to acclaimed film director Michel) that features live footage shot by fans. The video will be included on the enhanced cd. The album version of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is currently enjoying a second life and a surge in digital sales thanks to being sampled by rapper Kanye West on his current Top 5 hit "Stronger". The Daft Punk robots, in their signature retro-futuristic robot gear, also appear in West's "Stronger" video.
