-Hi, I'm Scott Stein. And as we continue to the ever growing flood of Windows 8 laptops, tablets, and crossover computers as I would call them, we have the standard non-touch Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430. Now, we've seen this laptop before. I reviewed this ultra book just a few short months ago in its Windows 7 integration. And it's pretty much exactly the same here with the addition of Windows 8. What you get though is a very funky 21 x 9 ultra wide screen display. That's 1792 x 768. That's definitely not normal, although the 768 pixels from top and bottom do match when you get on a regular laptop. It's a little more like a quasi 1080p display, but not exactly. What you get is that movies can play with much less leather boxing and often none at all. In fact, most movies [unk] box because of that ultra wide screen resolution. Now, you also get the ability to put web browsers or text side by side on that screen and they will actually work on it in sort of a-- a-- a large spread environment. How does that work in Windows 8? Well, as you can see, tiles do have an interesting way of-- of working quite well in that wide screen format, but it's not perfect. There's a little bit of overlap because most Windows devices are not meant to work in this resolution. You're also missing touch. There's no touch screen here. So, you may wanna reach up and-- and just do that and you can't, not on this integration at least. And that's a little bit of a disconnect, although the trackpad is large, feels comfortable. The keyboard is good. You're getting a core i5 processor here, 6 gigs of RAM, and a hybrid hard drive, 500 gigabytes with 32 gigabytes of solid-state caching that speeds things up a little bit. All of that for a price that is a little bit confusing. On Toshiba's website, the MSRP ranges anywhere up from the 1,080 down to 999 in a very similar configuration that seems exactly the same, but has a slightly different name. Bottom line is it's about a thousand dollars. Now, that's a little expensive now in the laptop landscape especially with a touchless laptop. Is it worth it to go into the wide screen? I think you're gonna find more bang for the buck going with a convertible touchscreen type of a funky laptop if you want something new and futuristic, but credit to Toshiba. It's not too expensive for this and it does give you a good ultra book performance under the hood. I'm Scott Stein and that's a look at the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430.

The media-geared Toshiba Satellite U845W
The Toshiba Satellite U845W has an extrawide 21:9 screen and Harman-Kardon speakers, but no DVD or Blu-ray player. The screen is a novelty act that offers some benefits, but it's really no better than your standard laptop for most uses.
The Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118X has a killer combination of Blu-ray, high-end graphics, and a fast processor at a price slightly north of $1,000, but poor battery life is the Achilles' heel on what would otherwise be an ideal 14-inch laptop.
Hands on with the Retina-like Toshiba Kirabook
The Kirabook's biggest selling point is its high-res screen. Far beyond 1,920x1,080, this is instead a 2,560x1,440-pixel-resolution display (called PixelPure), putting it firmly in the territory of the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Of course, that also includes MacBook-Pro-like prices, with the Kirabook running from $1,599 to $1,999.

Toshiba Satellite U845W (Windows 8) Review
The good: The wide-screen Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 has an extra-long, higher-resolution screen, Harman Kardon speakers that pack a punch, and an attractive, compact design with plenty of ports.
The bad: The keyboard and touch pad are uncomfortable, the wide screen isn't a perfect marriage with Windows 8, and the screen doesn’t always play nicely with all streaming video content.
The bottom line: Toshiba's experimental extra-wide-screen ultrabook gets a Windows 8 software upgrade, but it turns the Toshiba Satellite U845W into a computer imperfectly matched for what Windows 8 has to offer.
