Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition Video Transcript

>> Hi everyone. This is [inaudible].com, and today we check out the My Book mirror edition external hard drive from Western Digital. This is a slick external hard drive that's shaped like a book. On the front the drive has only one vertical multi state LED light that changes color in accordance with the device status, power on, working, idling, etcetera. On the back you will find a power connector, a low profile [inaudible] port, and a power switch. The My Book comes in two versions, two terabyte and one terabyte. However, it comes preconfigured with the red one. The actual storage you get is only half of that. It doesn't have Firewire or ESATA, which are faster connections for external hard drives. The best feature of the My Book is the fact that you can replace the hard drives by yourself, and you do not need tools for this. Although not obvious, all you need to do is pressing on top of the device, the cover will pop open, giving you the access to the drive base. There's a twist though. You can only use Western Digital hard drives with the My Book mirror edition. The My Book mirror edition is preformatted in NTFS, and works right away when hooked to a Windows computer. It also works with a Mac, but you will need to reformat it into OSX system. Considering the RAID one configuration, the My Book mirror edition performed well in CNET labs test, registering 138.4 megabit per second on write test, and 156.8 megabit on read test. In real world usage this is a great drive for backup solution, where data integrity is more important than fast performance. For more information about the drive, please check out our in-depth review at CNET.com. My name is [inaudible], and this has been the First Look at the My Book mirror edition from Western Digital. ^M00:01:48 [ music ]

Very good

The good: Decent performance; low cost per gigabyte; supports RAID 0 and 1; user-replaceable hard drives; cool and quiet operation, three-year warranty; useful bundled backup software.

The bad: No FireWire or eSATA; bulky power adaptor; supports only Western Digital hard drives; hard drives can't be set up as separate volumes.

The bottom line: The Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition is a compelling choice for an external drive, delivering excellent value, good performance, and two hard drives for added data security. For anyone looking for an external USB 2.0 drive, the My Book Mirror belongs on your shortlist.
