>> Hi, I'm John Calhoun, senior editor at CNET.com and this is the Voodoo Box. This is a hard drive based video box. It downloads movies that you choose over the Internet. And lets you watch them on your TV. First of all, the video quality is very good. They often say near DVD quality, but in this case, it's really true. Second of all, these guys have really impressive selection. They, it deals with all the major movie studios and they have thousands of titles online. The movies with Voodoo pretty much start immediately as soon as you chose them. Other advantages, it's got a really great interface. It has this very unique remote control that's RF capable. Very few buttons and a scroll wheel and you just move it around and choose what you want on the screen. The box also has all the video and audio connections you need to connect to any TV via a big screen HDTV or even a much older regular TV with composite or S Video connections. There are a few things to know on the down side. While there is no monthly fee, the price of the movies ranges anywhere from one dollar to 4 dollar, so it can get a little pricey if you do rent a lot of movies in a month. You can also download the movies to own them, but if you do rent them, there's only a 24 hour viewing window. And finally while it does a really great job of letting you watch movies on demand, straight off the Internet, it doesn't as of now anyways stream movies from networked PCs and hard drives elsewhere in your house. Those shortcomings not withstanding, if you are interesting in renting movies online and watching them on your big screen TV, the Voodoo Box is the closest product to date that we have seen that gets it right. I'm John Calhoun for CNET and this is Voodoo Box. ^M00:02:01 [ Music ]

Vudu BX100 Review

Editors' rating

The good: Set-top box that plays Internet-delivered video content at resolutions up to full 1080p HD; solid selection of movies and TV shows, as well as adult content, for sale and rental; no monthly fees; standard-definition and some HD selections start immediately; excellent onscreen interface and scroll-wheel remote; simple setup and configuration.

The bad: Best-quality HD content requires download queuing before viewing; can't stream media from networked PCs; can't transfer movies to portable devices for on-the-go viewing; no built-in Wi-Fi; rentals limited to 24-hour viewing period; impressive selection of titles still pales in comparison with the tens of thousands available from Netflix and Blockbuster; compatibility with universal remotes requires add-on dongle; box is worthless if company ever goes under.

The bottom line: Vudu sets itself apart from similar Internet video-on-demand boxes such as Apple and Netflix by delivering movies at better quality--up to full 1080p HD resolution and 5.1 surround sound.
