Vizio's risky, affordable 27-inch all-in-one Video Transcript

A I am rich brown senior editor for CNET -- -- a take a look at the Vizio C eight point 781. Anyway no Visio for making low cost -- -- this actually its first desktop PC among an assortment of computers that came out with this year. This particular model is an 1149. Desktop it comes of the 27 inch display and some interesting design choices. Its own is accessories and as well as the overall design systems. Some basic unit is very small -- it was really gone to great effort to -- the sort of amenable piece of hardware that some sacrifices the -- that though which -- kind of for better for worse. Now the riskiest decision designated the species to -- it was a touch -- that amounts. Now comes with Windows 7 right now but of course you can upgrade to windows eight when that comes out later this year and that's a much more touch oriented operating system. And we can report on the windows eight experience that the system right now because with touch comes a whole series of gestures and that software is available yet. But I can -- at least in Windows 7 the -- really doesn't cut it -- not to place. You -- it's just far too lagging in not precise enough. That said the problem is easy enough to fix -- supply your own maps. Now -- also comes the wireless keyboard it's a pretty good design here feels nice and sturdy. This Anderson buttons at the top here in particular as Vizio button brings up so it will support page. The others is video input select buttons -- system comes to HDMI inputs. Which means you can connect a cable box or game console or any other external video source. And his assistants -- home entertainment hub that's a great feature that -- like the seasonal ones Vizio certainly gotten a good effort to put that four problems PC. -- a third input devices remote control that's a pretty straightforward piece of hardware as a power button controls just the power for the displace that's useful. They might notice this big box of you know that's not only a subwoofer and it puts out these and audio but not -- more than we expect from a thousand dollar -- -- But also doubles as the power supply which is -- -- -- that it's good because it means is based unit can be nice and small it's bad because yet to separate subwoofer power supply -- connected to your computer and a power -- from the PC. Has to run through it in order to connect to the wall. Not the last real risky decision division made the system was to leave out an optical drive -- time. Course you can add an external optical drive which are kind you want for the USB ports. But no dvd or Blu-ray drive built into the system it sort of has some compromises if you wanna use it as a home entertainment PC. Now granted not everyone will -- the -- -- not everyone uses Blu-ray and you can easily replace that functionality with a game console and -- standalone optical player. -- -- -- the -- unit you'll see some pretty familiar looking PC ports you get and you SP three inputs which are great couple of each line but that we mentioned. A pleasant eSATA port here in the back if you look on the right side it's got an SD card input as well as another USB three Jack. -- -- the really fast core I five chips that can keep up with an application you wanna throw at it. Now comes the lower end Nvidia graphics chip the GeForce 640 and Elton chip. You may notice that with more advanced PC games are when you bump up the image quality settings performances not quite one. There is one minor compromise in terms with PC hardware it only has four gigabytes -- ran six and eight are pretty common at this price range. And -- for you maybe it was some power in terms of multimedia editing particularly in more recent versions -- If you put some clear effort to design the system and it also took an interest in risks for better for -- If you're willing to go along those risks or fruit and add your hardware to sort of make up what they lack the system actually could be pretty good if you're looking for a budget large -- For more traditional PC users would probably recommend assistance from them. Farmer brown isn't busy -- eight point 71.

Vizio CA27-A1 All-in-One (27-inch) Review

The good: The Vizio CA27-A1 offers a 27-inch all-in-one and a bold, mostly compelling set of home entertainment features for a reasonable price.

The bad: A few risks, like swapping in a touch pad for a mouse, don't pay off, and some quality shortcuts take away from the overall polish.

The bottom line: Forgive its quirks, and people looking for a big-screen all-in-one to serve as a small-room entertainment hub will find the Vizio CA27-A1 a price-competitive possibility.
