Vizio GV52LF Video Transcript

>> -- David Katzmaier, senior editor for cnet.com here, and I'm with the Vizio GV52LF. This is a 52-inch flat panel LCD TV, and of course as a Vizio TV it's also one of the least expensive models at its screen size. They can be available for around $2,000 which is very good for a 52-inch 1080 P LCD. Of course there's some 50-inch plasmas around the same price level, but if you've got your heart set on LCD this really is the bargain at this screen size. Vizio has the same styling for most of their TVs. It's a two-tone look with the glossy black above and the silver below. The speakers on this TV, the silver, can actually be detached if you want to have a complete glossy black look. You're going to hang this thing on the wall and you are going use an external sound system, so that's a nice feature. Of course the stand also comes off this TV. You can even remove that little face plate that says Grevia [Phonetic] 1080 P Liquid Crystal Display if you want to. The menu on this set offers a good selection of picture adjustments. You can go in and tweak the color temperature for red, green, and blue. A feature that we really like. Around back you'll find four HGMI inputs, which is, again, the most found on any TV regardless of price we've tested so far. There's also a PC input and 2 component inputs so the connectivity on this budget Vizio -- extremely good. The picture quality of this Vizio isn't quite up to the level of the -- a lot of the other large screen LCDs on the market. It doesn't really produce quite the same level of blacks when you turn down the lights and watch a dark scene. It's a little brighter black levels, but on the flip-side it does reproduce relatively accurate colors. So you can actually go in and tweak the colors to make them even more accurate which really does help the picture. Standard def performance on this set was relatively good although we did find a little bit more off-angle viewing problems than we'd like to see, when you go off to the side of this TV you see it turns a little bit reddish and greenish, depending on which side you are. Again, compared to more expensive LCDs on the market. That's a quick look at the Vizio GV52LF. And I'm David Katzmaier. ^M00:01:57 [ Music ]

Vizio GV52LF Review

Editors' rating

The good: Relatively accurate color; includes custom color temperature controls; comparatively uniform backlight; solid PC performance; excellent connectivity with four HDMI inputs; detachable speakers.

The bad: Produces a light shade of black; below-average shadow detail; poor off-angle viewing; backlight control not independent per input; emits faint humming sound when backlight is turned down.

The bottom line: Although a bargain by big-screen LCD standards, the 52-inch Vizio GV52LF has a hard time competing against similarly sized plasmas.
