>> I'm Nicole Lee, Associate Editor for CNET.com and this is a First Look at the Verizon Wireless CDM8950. As you can see it looks like a very dull, boring-looking phone with black and gray access, nothing very exciting, but the features belie its dull exterior. First, let's look at the outside. On the front here is a 1-inch external display, above the external display is a 1.3 megapixel camera and into display are three music player controls to control the music player when the phone is closed. Flip it open and you get a pretty nice 2-inch display here, very nice and bright and then each that you do get the typical navigation array. The keypad was very nice overall, quite roomy and easy to dial by feel. As we said earlier the CDM8950 may look like a dull phone, but actually has a lot of features. They include the performance on 1.3 megapixel camera, the music player, EV-DO support, GPS, stereo Bluetooth and more. And because it has EV-DO support it also has access to Verizon's array of broadband services like V Cast video, the streaming video of course and V Cast music which lets you download songs over the air. Probably the best feature of the CDM8950 is its price. It is free with a 2-year service agreement from Verizon Wireless. Dell's Dimension E521 doesn't have many bells and whistles, but a powerful dual-core AMD processor lends it unexpected performance and a strong bang for the buck.

Velocity Micro Vector Campus Edition

As much as we like the look and feel of Velocity Micro's Vector Campus Edition desktop, we can't recommend it. It suffers from poor bang-for-the-buck, a lack of configurable options, and a narrow upgrade path.

Oppo DV-983H

The Oppo DV-983H is pretty much the ultimate standard-def disc player, but its high price means videophiles on a budget can get a better bang for their buck.

ABS Ultimate X Striker Elite

We like the ABS Ultimate X Striker Elite gaming PC for its tidy, bang-for-the-buck design and overall robust set of features.

Creative Zen Mozaic

The Creative Zen Mozaic offers great bang for your buck as far as MP3 players go: get super sound quality, a boatload of features, and a cool interface--all wrapped in a funky design at an ultralow price.

Samsung Q2

The Samsung Q2 offers excellent bang for your buck thanks to its rock-bottom pricing, plentiful features, lovely screen, and solid sound quality.

Motorola Krzr K1m

Though it's oh-so-pretty, the Motorola Krzr K1m doesn't offer any new features. Plus, its multimedia performance isn't reliable.

Sony Ericsson S710a

Though the multimedia-friendly Sony Ericsson S710a has a solid feature set and an alternative design, it doesn't come together as well as it could.

LG VX9800

The snazzy-looking new LG VX9800 brings a wealth of features to Verizon Wireless customers.

Sanyo SCP-2700 (Sprint)

With its great messaging interface and affordable pricing, the Sanyo SCP-2700 offers excellent bang for your buck.

Verizon Wireless CDM8950 Review

Editors' rating

The good: The Verizon Wireless CDM8950 has external music player keys, EV-DO, stereo Bluetooth, and GPS. It's free with a contract.

The bad: The phone has a boring design and the navigation array is cramped. The music player interface is clunky as well.

The bottom line: Though it doesn't look like much, the Verizon Wireless CDM8950's multimedia features and free price tag provide unbeatable bang for the buck.
