Velocity Micro CineMagix Grand Theater Video Transcript

>> Hi, I'm Rich Brown, senior editor for CNET.com. Today we are going to take a look at the Velocity Micro Cinemagic's Grand Theatre. To drive this system velocity micro includes a traditional Windows remote as well as a wireless key board with cursor control on the corner; it lets you drive the mouse around the screen. It's not really that accurate but it's good enough. The other thing you should think about with this system is that it's pretty big, you should definitely check out to make sure it's going to fit in your home theater rack. Over here, you can see a little LED display, it's not full color, or anything but, it will show track listings, time, and other basic information. Up here, you will see a blue Ray burner; it will play blue ray movies and burn any kind of disc format for the most part. We also found that the video quality with this one was pretty outstanding and behind this front door here, you'll see a collection of inputs and outputs, as well as a media card reader, that's obviously pretty handy for moving data between digital cameras. Now from the fact that system looks a little bit more familiar. Here's connection for an analog TV tuner, Velocity Micro will offer cable card support when it's available. Over here, you will see the connections from the video card, there is two DVI ports they worked well with a protected path so you don't have to worry about blue ray working with your HD television. Now what you might notice is that there is no sound card on this system, velocity micro just leaves it to the traditional motherboard outputs so you have 5.1 analog coming here, as well as a digital audio output here. Now as a computer this is actually a pretty powerful system, Velocity Micro includes one of the newer Intel Quad core processors so it's plenty fast. There is tons of hard drive storage as well as room for another drive if you want to add it. There is a G47600GT graphics card, there's also a little bit of room for expansion, so you can add a sound card or other features if you want to. I'm Rich Brown and that's the Velocity Micro Cinemagic Grand Theatre. ^M00:01:45 [ Music ]

Velocity Micro CineMagix Grand Theater Review

Editors' rating

The good: Clean-lined design; takes advantage of all the new Vista media-oriented features, such as HD video and CableCard support; strong application and 3D performance; more bang for the buck than the home theater PC competition; outstanding Blu-ray video quality.

The bad: Big chassis; no built-in audio receiver; beta graphics card drivers can't handle component video output; game-friendly configuration, but PC gaming in the living room is problematic.

The bottom line: Velocity Micro's first full-fledged home theater PC pulls very few punches in providing a complete digital media experience. It's big, it lacks a built-in audio receiver, and it invites PC gaming into the living room, which has never been the best fit. It's also the victim of a few Vista-related growing pains. On balance, though, Velocity Micro has as complete a home theater PC as we've seen.
