>> Dong Ngo: Hello my name is Dong Ngo and welcome back to the first look at NAS server. Today we have the Valkyrie Dual Bay NAS from Patriot. Despite the exotic name Valkyrie this is a rather simple and limited NAS server. On the front here you see it has 1 USB port. So hit the copy button and if you put extra hard drive like a thumb drive into this USB port and press the button the entire content of the thumb drive will be copied into the NAS server. This is very you know popular feature of most NAS servers and on the back of the unit you can also find another USB port and this port can be used again for another external hard drive or for a printer and underneath here you can find the gigabit Ethernet and that's about it. The NAS server has no other ports you know or any other [inaudible]. So that server has a few surprises and actually they are not good ones. The first of them is the dual bay. So this is dual bay it can hold 2 hard drives and you can see here the 2 trays. This tray can be pulled down by pressing the bottom on the front of them to get the latch out and you pull it now the tray is coming out. So now here's a hard drive and it's hard to figure out how we can put the hard drive on the tray, this way or this way because it's just no instruction here and even then you have to look inside the bay to figure out how you can install the hard drive on the tray. So the issue with the tray that if it is just a little bit more well thought out you will have a lot of time and anguish. The second issue we have with the NAS server is the manual in here contained on the CD here does not give you the good instruction on how to use or install the unit and lastly the NAS server's performance is at best mediocre in our test. [ Background music ] It actually one of the slowest NAS servers we've ever tested. Once again my name is Dong Ngo and this has been the first at the Valkyrie Dual Bay NAS server from Patriot. Valkyrie Dual Bay NAS server Review
The good: The Valkyrie Dual-Bay NAS server is one of the most affordable two-bay RAID-ready NAS servers on the market. It's also compact, good-looking, and supports USB printers.
The bad: The Valkyrie Dual-Bay NAS server is rather buggy, has an unintuitive Web interface, and comes with badly designed drive bays. Its performance is the lowest among recent NAS servers, and the setup instructions are useless.
The bottom line: Despite its friendly price tag and its good looks, the Valkyrie Dual-Bay NAS server isn't a well-designed network storage device, and its slow performance will sure make you think twice about getting one.
