Headphone companies well aware of this proliferation turn out an array of products aimed at this subset of music listeners. V-Moda didn't necessarily have DJs in mind when it released the Crossfade LP headphones, but it's become clear that that's exactly who this set is made for. Most of the DJs I know consider style a top priority right up there with music, and the Crossfade LPs don't disappoint in this regard. The headphones have a lovely, urban industrial design that is eye-catching as well as well constructed. I'm particularly fond of the thin and metal arms that attach the ear cups to the band as well as the miniature bolts that affix the magnesium accent plates to the headphones. The version I have here is gun metal black, but the headphones also come in pearl white and phantom chrome, which are equally appealing. The cables are equally well-designed. They're thick, coated in cloth and reinforced with Kevlar inside, which gives me high hopes for durability. V-Moda includes two detachable cables with the set, one with an integrated mike and iPod controls and one without. Insofar as sound quality's concerned, the Crossfade LPs offer an interesting sound space. It's very open and ever so slightly echoey. To my ears, this doesn't lend itself well to all music, but it sounds great for club and dance music. So if that's your MO, these headphones aren't a bad investment at $250. The good: The V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones feature an eye-catching design and solid construction that offers a comfy fit. The package includes several nice extras such as detachable cloth-covered cables, an iPhone/iPod remote and inline mic, and a stylish hard-sided case.
The bad: The Crossfade LP headphones don't offer the most balanced audio response, and they don't fold down flat for easy transport.
The bottom line: The V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones look good, feel durable, and offer plenty of desirable extras, but the clubby leaning to the sound space does not lend itself well to all genres of music. This set is best suited to DJs and dance music aficionados.
