Featuring fierce rivalry, stopwatch suspense, and larger-than-life personalities, "Murderball", winner of the Documentary Audience Award and a Special Jury Prize for Editing at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, is a film about tough, highly competitive rugby players. Quadriplegic rugby players. Whether by car wreck, fist fight, gun shot, or rogue bacteria, these men were forced to live life sitting down. In their own version of the full-contact sport, they smash the hell out of each other in custom-made gladiator-like wheelchairs. And, no, they don't wear helmets. From the gyms of middle America to the Olympic arena in Athens, Greece, "Murderball" tells the story of a group of world-class athletes unlike any ever shown on screen. In addition to smashing chairs, it will smash every stereotype you ever had about the disabled. It is a film about family, revenge, honor, sex (yes, they can) and the triumph of love over loss. High School Record follows four awkward 17-year-olds as they struggle through their senior year. Like most high school students, they ride a continual wave of embarrassment: crappy after-school jobs, attempted sex in the science room, tinfoil shorts, guitar-strumming hippie teachers and brushes with the law. The only difference is that their moments of humiliation are all caught on tape - our gang of four are the subjects of a documentary shot by fellow classmates. A journey into narrative anarchy, High School Record is an engaging film partially improvised by its young cast. Written by Ben Wolfinsohn and based on his own high school experiences, HIGH SCHOOL RECORD is a painfully funny exploration of the teenage mind. High School Record is a follow up to Wolfinsohn's critically acclaimed music documentary Friends Forever.

Shot on location in downtown Brooklyn, NY, the film features the brilliant comedy stylings of Dave Chappelle, along with one-time-only performances by Kanye West, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Dead Prez, Jill Scott, and The Roots, among others. Inspired in part by the 1973 documentary "Wattstax," the film was directed by Academy Award-winning Michel Gondry, with cinematography by Ellen Kuras.
"Why We Fight," the new documentary by Eugene Jarecki, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, is an unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a "who's who" of military and beltway insiders. Featuring John McCain, Gore Vidal, William Kristol, Chalmers Johnson, Richard Perle, and others, "Why We Fight" launches a bipartisan inquiry into the workings of the military industrial complex and the rise of the American Empire.
Inspired by Dwight Eisenhower's legendary farewell speech (in which he coined the phrase "military industrial complex"), filmmaker Jarecki ("The Trials of Henry Kissinger") surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century's military adventures, asking how--and telling why--a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings and loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.
The film moves beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why: why does America fight? What are the forces--political, economic, ideological--that drive us to fight against an ever-changing enemy?
"Frank Capra made a series of films during World War II called 'Why We Fight' that explored America's reasons for entering the war," Jarecki notes. "Today, with our troops engaged in Iraq and elsewhere for reasons far less clear, I think it's crucial to ask the questions: 'Why are we doing what we are doing? What is it doing to others? And what is it doing to us?'"

"Meditate and Destroy" trailer
"Meditate and Destroy" is a feature-length documentary that will provide an intimate portrait of Noah Levine, a Buddhist meditation teacher who uses his personal experience and punk rocker sensibilities to teach meditation in juvenile halls, high security prisons, and urban centers around the country. After a self-destructive adolescence of criminal activity and substance abuse, Noah now follows and shows others a path of spirituality and community service. Noah has a familiar counter-culture appearance; his arms are fully tattooed, he has gold teeth, and wears black t-shirts of his favorite bands. It seems a strange juxtaposition, however, to discover he is both a punk rocker and a devout Buddhist. "Meditate and Destroy" will fill a void in the media by exploring how the younger generations in America -- sometimes characterized as apathetic and self-involved-- are finding a positive way to channel rebellion and dissatisfaction. Through the story of Noah Levine, our film will help raise an important discussion on the meaning of spirituality among today's youth, personal identity, the punk rock ethos, and addiction recovery. "Meditate and Destroy" will not take a position that asserts Noah is an "enlightened guru" or somehow "holier than thou". This documentary aims to keep a reflective stance, acknowledging through an objective look at Noah's life that his transformation is ongoing. We won't sidestep the difficult questions for easy answers. Instead, our diverse portrait of Noah will allow viewers to reflect on what makes a former criminal become a peace-loving spiritual practitioner.

"No Direction Home: Bob Dylan" DVD trailer
The film, which focuses on the singer-songwriter's life and music from 1961-66, includes never-seen performance footage and interviews with artists and musicians whose lives intertwined with Dylan's during that time. Dylan talks openly and extensively about this critical period in his career, detailing the journey from his hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota, to Greenwich Village, New York, where he became the center of a musical and cultural upheaval, the effects of which are still felt today. For the first time, The Bob Dylan Archives has made available rare treasures from its film, tape and stills collection, including footage from Murray Lerner's film Festival documenting performances at the 1963, 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, previously unreleased outtakes from D.A. Pennebaker's famed 1967 documentary "Don't Look Back", and interviews with Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Maria Muldaur, and many others. In anticipation of the film, members of Dylan's worldwide community of fans also contributed rarities from their own collections.
Forest Film Fest: "'Best Of' DVD, Volume I" trailer
PORTLAND, OREGON - The FOREST FILM FEST, Portland's own annual short film and video festival, announced the FOREST FILM FEST: "Best Of" DVD, Volume I, an entertaining compilation DVD of the 2004 winning films representing the best in animation, documentary, experimental, student and short fiction films. Bonus material is also included celebrating the festival's inaugural year. The FOREST FILM FEST holds it annual festival in May at the Clinton Street Theater. The festival is an opportunity for local, independent and student filmmakers to showcase their work and to educate while entertaining the public on the importance of short film.
