>> Hi, I'm Dan Ackman, senior editor at cnet.com and we are taking a look at the Toshiba Qosimo G45. This is Toshiba's brand new 17-inch massive desktop replacement laptop. It's basically a home theater in a box, you can lug it around with you, set it up and have movie time wherever you are. Now home theater laptops, particularly 17-inch models, generally all have kind of the same components inside, so in order to differentiate them you really have to dress them up nicely and add a lot of extra features, and that's what Toshiba does with this one. What you do get is a bunch of really cool control features. You get big volume job wheel over here, you get four-way rocker switch over here that controls a bunch of multimedia functions, and you get my favorite, these little touch buttons up here for play, pause, stop, launching different media features like that. You also get a really good audio system which is kind of rare on a laptop. We have one, two, three, four speakers right here -- and a sub woofer built into the bottom. And of course if you're watching those movies you get an HD DVD drive, if that's your high definition format of choice, and it's even an HD DVD recordable drive. Of course all this high def action isn't going to do you any good if your laptop screen is not up to the task. And this guy has a 1920 by 1200 resolution, it's full 1080 P HD -- says here, right there on the sticker. And of course you get all the usually stuff like a fingerprint reader and a web cam, and there's even an HGMI output for sending the signal to your big screen TV. Of course this laptop is huge and hugely expensive, so Toshiba throws in a bunch of extras so you don't feel ripped off. They give you a full size media standard remote control and even an external TV tuner box. You can hook it up and record TV shows. For a budget Windows 7 thin-and-light laptop that you won't need to recharge often, you could do a lot worse than the Toshiba Satellite T135-S1309.

The good: Eye-catching design; HD DVD-R drive, HDMI output; large volume jogwheel and other media controls; includes external TV tuner and remote.
The bad: Heavy and expensive; no configuration options; good, but not top-of-the-line, parts.
The bottom line: Toshiba's high-end Qosmio G45-AV680 is great for movies and multimedia, and its unique onboard controls are fun to use--but the recordable HD DVD drive seems like an expensive splurge few will need.
