>> I'm Dan Ackerman, senior editor at CNET.com and we are taking a look at the Toshiba R400. This is one of the very first Windows Vista laptops that we've seen. This is a very attractive machine. Kind of a very white, glossy look kind of like a Mac. And it is not just a regular laptop. It is something we're going to be seeing a lot more of in 2007. It is a convertible tablet. What does that mean? That means you can take the screen, flip it around, fold it down and then you have got a tablet that you can carry around with you. Now unlike a lot of other tablets, you can't actually use your hands and fingers to control this. You need the special active stylist that is stored right in the base. And with the active stylist, then you can click on the screen and move Windows around and do all kinds of cool things like that. Now the handwriting recognition of Windows Vista is really great. You can just open up one of these little note pads right here and jot down your note, hi there. And more often than not, it will correctly interpret what you said. See, hi there. If you got it wrong, you can actually flip the active stylist around and use this fake eraser to fake eraser what you fake wrote. And when you're done with the tablet you can just flip it back around and you are back in regular laptop mode. There's a fingerprint reader right under this, being for security. And there's a built in EVDO card in case you want to get a mobile broadband account. One cool Windows Vista feature there is a little OLED display right here on the front edge that can tell you what time it is, your battery level, if you're connected to the Internet and if you set it up properly, even if you have new email. Now this guy is very thin and light. One of the reasons is there's no optical drive built in. You can actually get an external optical drive and hook it up with a USB cable. In order to boost the battery life, there's actually an ultra low voltage processor in there, but we didn't really see enough of a battery boost to warrant that. It's also a little expensive for what you get, but if you absolutely have to be the first one on the block with a really sharp looking Windows Vista system, this is one of the only games in town. I am Dan Ackerman and that is the Toshiba R400. ^M00:02:08 [ Music ]
