>> Hey I'm Donald Bell, Senior Editor for digital audio and MP3 and today we're taking a first look at the Toshiba Gigabeat T400. The Gigabeat T is a 4 gigabyte flash-based MP3 player that really mirrors a lot of the best characteristics that we love about the Toshiba Gigabeat S. The Gigabeat T has the Gigabeat S's same 2.4 inch LCD screen; aside from the fact that it has really excellent audio quality, one of the best reasons to pick up the Gigabeat T is it's really tight integration with the Windows portable media player platform. If you have Windows Media Center running on your home computer and you like the way Windows Media Center works as a DVR solution for your home, getting that content onto the Gigabeat T is really easy. If you are a MAC user it's not gonna be the player for you. It won't even connect to a MAC; it uses an MTP USB connection mode. The Gigabeat T supports MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless Wave, and even DRM protected WMA music files. On the video end of things it supports just WMV video files. The screen resolution on the Toshiba Gigabeat T is 320 by 240; so it's gonna be about the same resolution you're gonna find on Apple Ipod Classic or Ipod Nano, but we do like the viewing angles a little bit better on the Gigabeat T than the Ipod options. Really this is competing against the hoard of flash based portable video players that are coming down the pipe right now. The thing that's kind of holding it back though is that it's only 4 gigabytes of capacity, and there's no room for putting in extra storage cards. Still it's an excellent sounding player. The audio quality is one of the best we've experienced, so the Gigabeat T is offered in three different colors, each of different colors come with their own color matching pair of ear buds. It only comes in one capacity though, 4 gigabytes at 120 dollars. So I'm Donald Bell and that was a first look at the Toshiba Gigabeat T. ^M00:01:58 [ Music ] ^M00:02:00

Toshiba Gigabeat T400 (4GB, pink) Review

Editors' rating

The good: The affordable Toshiba Gigabeat T400 MP3 player provides excellent sound quality, airtight integration with Windows Media Center, support for subscription music content, an elegant user interface, and a color screen that really pops.

The bad: With only 4GB of internal memory and no expandability, the Gigabeat T400 just can't hack it as a portable video player.

The bottom line: The Toshiba Gigabeat T400 is a stellar performer that is crippled by a pitifully small amount of storage. If you can live with just 4GB of storage, the Gigabeat T400 offers brilliant audio fidelity, and a convenient way for Windows Media Center users to take a bite-size portion of their TV, movie, music, and photo collection on the go.
