>> David Katzmaier: David Katzmaier here from CNET and this is the Toshiba 32 AV502U. There's also a 26 and a 37 inch member of the series. This review will apply to all 3 sizes. This is one of Toshiba's least expensive TVs for 2009. It's a 720P resolution model. Of course at this screen size you really don't care about resolution 1080P is pretty much useless. Being an entry level set Toshiba didn't endow this thing with the greatest styling. There is pretty pedestrian look to this set of course it does have the standard glossy black and there is a stand here that does not swivel but aside from that it'll blend right in with all the other TVs on the wall. In terms of features there's really not all that much going on. You can do a little bit to adjust the picture quality, you can go in and play around with a color temperature and there's a gamma setting, a couple of things that aren't found on a lot of the other entry level TVs out there. Conductivity on the set is average for the breed around back you'll find 2 HDMI inputs, 2 component video inputs and a PC input. The side panel adds another AV input so all told you can connect a good amount of gear to this but if you need a 3rd HDMI you should look for another entry level set. Picture quality on the Toshiba was a mixed bag we really did appreciate the sets relatively deep black levels among the best blacks we've seen for an entry level 32 inch LCD. Of course that's not saying much, it's not gonnna give you great home theater picture quality but again pretty good for the breed. On the flip side the color was less accurate than a lot of others we've seen. Color decoding did tend to make stuff a little bit orangish or accentuate the cyan a little too much so all things considered you can get slightly better color accuracy but again not bad for an entry level TV. Although subpar black levels keep it from besting the LCD champs, the Toshiba ZV650U series is still one of the better 240Hz values among TVs with a 240Hz effect.

Toshiba 46SV670U

Albeit slightly less impressive than other LED-based LCDs with local dimming, the Toshiba SV670U also costs less and still gives great blacks.

Toshiba Satellite U205

Though the Satellite U205 isn't the best performer, it's inexpensive and powerful enough for productivity tasks, and it has good battery life.

HP LC3760N

While the HP LC3760N's color isn't the most accurate we've seen, its solid black levels and connectivity combine to outclass most budget LCDs.

The Toshiba 40E220U is a great value for its price

At $100 or so cheaper than the Samsung E550, the Toshiba E220 is a solid performer and better than most TVs at the price.

Toshiba BDX2700

The Toshiba BDX2700 is currently a little cheaper than other midrange Blu-ray players and includes 7.1 analog outputs, but otherwise there's little reason to favor it over faster models with better features.

Panasonic's VT60 plasma has some great upgrades for this year

Panasonic's VT60 Series offers better blacks, richer color, and a faster driver than last years model.

The media-geared Toshiba Satellite U845W

The Toshiba Satellite U845W has an extrawide 21:9 screen and Harman-Kardon speakers, but no DVD or Blu-ray player. The screen is a novelty act that offers some benefits, but it's really no better than your standard laptop for most uses.

Vizio VP322

The extremely inexpensive 32-inch Vizio VP322 introduces a new size category for plasma, but its overall performance is no better, and often worse, than that of similar-size LCDs.

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916

The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916 offers up a unique design, and slightly better graphics performance than the competition.

Toshiba 32AV502U Review

The good: Inexpensive; produces relatively deep black levels for an entry-level LCD; above-average selection of picture controls; adequate connectivity with two HDMI and two component-video inputs.

The bad: Less accurate color than some entry-level LCDs; some artifacts with 1080i sources; unremarkable styling; confusing remote and menu system.

The bottom line: While no style maven or template for reference color, the Toshiba AV502U series can do black levels better than most inexpensive LCDs.
