>> Hey Donald Bell here for CNET at CES 2009, and I'm here to give you a first look at the Tonium pacemaker. This is a MP3 player, a very unique MP3 player, that is geared towards the DJ market. It runs about 550 dollars which is expensive for an MP3 player, but for everything it does it's actually a pretty good price for what you're getting. You're basically getting a DJ set up packed into a 60 gigabyte MP3 player. Now we've seen this before at last year's CES, the original pacemaker. This is the second generation of it, it's actually a separate generation of it that has a lower hard drive capacity, 60 instead of 120, and a lower price point, 550 instead of 800 dollars you'd be paying for the first generation pacemaker. This is 4 DJ's, meant to get your whole digital music collection right in the player, and you select tracks as if you'd be selecting tracks to put on two different turntables. So you've got a track list here where you can scroll, figure out what track you want, select a track, push it over to one deck or the other, and then you can beat match them, you can do affects, you can do EQ. You've got a touch strip cross trader here that will cross trade between the two different tracks. You also have this really neat multi gesture track pad control on the bottom half of the pacemaker. Now you use this by either scrolling around with your finger, or you can also do movements where you can go up, down, left, or right to select tracks, skip, apply affects, do EQ. It's a really neat and well thought out device. On the bottom here, you've got your line output, your headphone output, and your power. And on the top here you've got your USB connection... your power switch, and a mode switch here that kicks you into different settings that are on the pacemaker. Another really cool feature of this pacemaker model that we didn't see in last year's model, is an auto beat matching feature which makes DJing much easier. The original model, you really had to have some polished DJ sensibilities to match the tempos of one track to another. This one lets you do it on the fly, with a touch of the button you can match up the tempo to different tracks and it's much easier to get the party going without a lot of practice. So again, we're looking at the pacemaker, this is a version 2 of the pacemaker coming out in the spring of 2009. And the price point is 550 dollars, and if you've got a DJ in your life who is looking for a pocket sized way to get the party going, this is probably the only device out there that does exactly that. This second generation of the pacemaker is due out in the spring of 2009 at 550 dollars. For CNET dot com, I'm Donald Bell for CES 2009. [ music ]

Tonium Pacemaker (60GB) Review
The good: The second-generation of the DJ-friendly Pacemaker MP3 player offers a more affordable price than the original model, and new features, such as automatic tempo matching, expanded effects, audio time-stretching, and a master EQ.
The bad: The slashed price of the Pacemaker comes at the cost of a smaller hard drive, and the complaints we had about the previous model's complicated interface design haven't changed.
The bottom line: The Pacemaker is a fun tool for DJs on the go. It's not our first choice for playing a DJ gig, but it gets the job done, and the price is a fair reflection of its features and portable design.
