Today in Tech History: May 29, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's May 29, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. Today in 1919, a total solar eclipse took place. Arthur Eddington watched it in Africa and Andrew Crommelin watched in Brazil, and between the two of them, they used the eclipse to test and ultimately confirm Einstein's theory of general relativity. Today in 1950, the St. Roch arrived in Vancouver, British Columbia, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate North America. Yeah. 1950. Shows how hard THAT was. It's all that ICE up there. In NOT-tech history, today is the date that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, in 1953, using almost NONE of the technology that's used in Everest climbs today. Except compressed oxygen! They did have that! And finally, on this date in 1999, the Space Shuttle Discovery completed the first docking with the International Space Station. That's all the news for this date, but I'll be back tomorrow with more tech history tidbits.
