Today in Tech History: May 27, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's May 27, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1919, the first EVER transatlantic flight was completed. Three Navy planes took off from New York on May 8, 1919, and only one made it all the way to Lisbon, with multiple stops and some mechanical issues. Sadly, Lieutenant Commander Albert C. Read and his crew got almost NO attention for this accomplishment. First, because two British pilots made the first non-STOP trans-Atlantic flight a couple of weeks later, and then because we really only remember Charles Lindbergh for doing that all by himself in 1927. But good work, Lt. Read. Also in this date in 1927, the Ford Motor Company stopped making the Model T, and started working on the Model A. And in 1930, the Chrysler Building in New York opened to the public. It was, at that time, the tallest building in the world -- over a thousand feet tall. That's all the high-flying news for today. Tune in tomorrow for more tech history.
