Today in Tech History: May 21, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Tom Merritt. It's May 21, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date, as you can probably guess, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart landed safely after their solo, nonstop, Atlantic flight crossings in 1927 and 1932, respectively. In nuclear testing news, the U.S. successfully detonated its first aircraft-deliverable hydrogen bomb on this date in 1956. The Shot Redwing-Cherokee was detonated at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, and had a yield of 3.8 megatons. Finally, this is the birth date of Glenn Curtiss, an American aviation pioneer born in 1878. Not only was Curtiss the first person to be granted an air pilot license, he also manufactured motorcycles and set world-speed records in 1903 and 1907, riding his own designs. The one he rode in 1907 didn't have any brakes ... nevertheless, he survived until 1930. That's it for today, everyone. Tune in tomorrow for more wacky tech facts.
