Today in Tech History: May 16, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood! It's May 16, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1951, El Al Israel Airlines began operating the first regularly-scheduled transatlantic flights between New York and London. The airline is frequently cited as the most secure in the world -- NOT because it has had the fewest accidents, but because it has stopped many attempted hijackings, bombings, and other attacks. In 1960, good old Theodore Maiman, the guy who made the first working laser, actually OPERATED that laser at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California. Today in 1969, a Soviet spaceprobe called Venera 5 landed on Venus. And finally, on this date in 1992, the Space Shuttle Endeavour safely completed its maiden voyage. And that's it for today, everyone. See you back here tomorrow for more tech milestones.
