Today in Tech History: June 4, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's June 4, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1876, the Transcontinental Express train arrived in San Francisco just 83 hours and 39 minutes after leaving New York City. The trip was a publicity stunt to promote the speediness of traveling on the Transcontinental Railroad, which was completed in 1869. Everyone was suitably impressed. Also on this date in 1973, Don Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain were granted a patent for the automatic teller machine. And finally, Beno Gutenberg was born on this date in 1889. He was a German-born seismologist who, among other contributions, collaborated with Charles Francis Richter to develop the Richter scale for measuring an earthquake's magnitude. And that's all the tech trivia for today; we'll be back tomorrow with more earth-shaking tech history.
