Today in Tech History: June 27, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Molly Wood. Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's June 27, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. Before we jump in, I should let you know that today is Bill Gates' last day as a full-time Microsoft employee. Update the Wikipedia: tech history is being made RIGHT NOW. Also on this date in 1967, the world's first electronic ATM was installed in Enfield, London, at Barclays Bank. The first person to use it was British TV and film actor Reg Varney. And actually, that wasn't the first crack at automatic teller machinery. City Bank of New York actually installed a mechanical cash dispenser in 1939, but apparently, it only lasted six months, because no one used it. Today in 1954, the world's first nuclear power station opened in Obninsk, near Moscow. And today marks the passing of Eugene Augustin Lauste, a French inventor who died in 1935. In 1911, he showed a movie ... with SOUND in it! The exhibition may have been the first-ever American showing of sound-on-film technology. Lauste was quite a prolific inventor overall, and in fact held 53 French patents by the age of 23. That's all the boy genius news I've got for today, but I'll see you back here tomorrow for more tech history.
