Today in Tech History: June 25, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's June 25, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. This date in 1967 marks the broadcast of the first, live, international satellite TV production. It was called "Our World," and it featured opera singer Maria Callas, artist Pablo Picasso, and performers were invited to perform from 19 countries. The two- and-a-half hour show involved 10,000 technicians, producers, and translators. Fourteen countries participated, an estimated 400 million people watched it, and during the broadcast The Beatles first performed the song "All You Need Is Love." Also on this date in 1997, the unmanned freighter spacecraft from the Russian Progress line crashed into the Mir space station. The collision knocked out half the station's power and ruptured a pressurized laboratory, and reduced life-support functions on board the space station. CNN called it " worst orbital collision ever." Nevertheless, Mir survived and remained in orbit until March 2001. And that's it for today, everyone. See you back here tomorrow for more tech history tidbits.
