Today in Tech History: July 6, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's July 6, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1947, the AK-47 went into production in the Soviet Union -- the name stands for Automatic rifle Kalashnikov model of 1947 year. It remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world, and over the years, it's developed some strong cultural associations. During the Cold War and after the fall of Soviet Russia, the weapon was widely distributed to countries and groups that are anti-American -- that's why, in American movies, the AK-47 is often the rifle you'll find in the hands of the bad guys. On this date in 2003, the Planetary Radar in Eupatoria, a city in the Ukraine, sent a message to space. Called a METI, or Messaging to Extraterrestrial Intelligence, the Cosmic Call 2 message went out to five stars. The first message will arrive in 2036, the last in 2049. And then we'll know. Finally, today marks the passing, in 1851, of Thomas Davenport. He invented the electric motor and the electric locomotive in 1834. That's all the tech history tidbits we've got for today, but I'll have plenty more coming your way tomorrow.
