Hi, I'm Tom Merritt. It's July 25, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. Some call it the Internet of the 1800s. William Cooke demonstrated the first commercial use of the electric telegraph today in 1837. He sent a little note from Euston to Camden Town in London. Speaking of England, in 1909 Louis Bleriot made the first flight across the English channel in a heavier than air machine, traveling from Calais to Dover in 37 minutes. Cuneel's faster. In 1965 Bob Dylan made a surprise switch from acoustic to electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival and practically caused a riot. Last Newport Festival he ever did. Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to go for a walk in space -- a space walk -- in 1984. And today in this year 2008 is the 9th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. If you're watching this at work, you need to thank them And thank you for watching. Come back tomorrow to find out what happened in the past on Today in Tech History.
