Today in Tech History: July 21, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's July 21, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1919, a dirigible called Wingfoot Air Express crashed into the Illinois Trust and Savings Building in Chicago. 12 people died. Those things were dangerous. Today in 1931, CBS's New York City station began, for the first time in the U.S., broadcasting a seven-day-a-week television schedule. Today in 2002, telecom giant WorldCom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It was the largest filing in U.S. history, and it came after a dramatic series of accounting scandals. Later, regulators said the company's worth had been inflated by as much as 11 billion dollars. WorldCom changed its name to MCI, emerged from bankruptcy in 2004, and was purchased by Verizon in 2005. Former CEO Bernard Ebbers ... went to jail. And finally, a momentous day in tech history ... on this date in 1981, Internet celebrity and former CNET TV personality Veronica Belmont was born. Happy Birthday, Veronica. And that's all the happy birthdays we've got for today! Come on back tomorrow for more.
