Today in Tech History: July 18, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's July 18, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. On this date in 1965, the Zond 3 became the first of the Soviet Zond spacecrafts to successfully complete its mission. It performed a Lunar flyby and took many photographs that were considered pretty amazing for the time. In other space news, today in 1966, the Gemini 10 launched. It was the 8th manned Gemini flight from NASA and the 16th manned American flight. Speaking of astronauts, today is the birthday of the astronaut- turned politician John Glenn. And finally, today in 1923, Jerome H. Lemelson was born. He would become the second most prolific inventor in American history, holding over 600 patents. His inventions either created or enabled everything from industrial robots, cordless phones, and fax machines to videocassette recorders, camcorders and the magnetic tape drive used in Sony's Walkman tape players. He was also a fierce advocate for independent inventors, and sued several companies for infringing on his work. Oh, by the way ... the MOST prolific inventor in American history? Thomas Alva Edison. You can't beat that guy. Well, MY work here is done for today, but I'll be back with more historical tech tales tomorrow.
