Today in Tech History: July 17, 2008 Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Molly Wood. It's July 17, 2008, and here's what happened today in technology history. Today is the birth date of Gordon Gould, born in 1920. He's is widely credited with having invented the laser, although he's best known for his 30-year attempt to PATENT the laser. He was also unable to participate in attempts to BUILD a working laser, because the government classified those efforts ... and Gould had participated in communist activities, so he couldn't get clearance. As a result, old Theodore Maiman, who we've talked about before, ended up building the first working laser. Poor Gould. Plus, he never did get a U.S. patent on the laser. Lasers are a tough business. And on that note, we'll see you back here tomorrow with more tech "A's for effort."
