Today in Tech History: July 12, 2008 Video Transcript
Today is a surprisingly slow day ... in history. Seriously. History kind of takes July 12th off. But today is the birth date of George Eastman, born in 1854. He went on to found the Eastman Kodak Company (now known as Kodak) and invented the roll of film. When registering the trademark Kodak, he chose the letter K because it was a favorite letter of his, saying that it was "a strong, incisive sort of letter." Today also marks the passing of Ole Evinrude, who died in 1934. Old Ole invented the first practical outboard motor. And history has it that he was inspired by a most practical concern. Ole was rowing his boat to get some ice cream for his girlfriend on a hot day, but by the time he got back ... his gallon of ice cream had melted away. That'll do it for today, everyone, but more inventions to help you impress the ladies coming your way tomorrow.
