Today in Tech History: April 24, 2008 Video Transcript
Hi I'm Molly Wood. Its April 24th, 2008 and here is what happened today in technology history. We're going WAY back into history today. According to legend, it was on this date in 1184 BC that Greek soldiers entered the city of Troy hidden in the giant Trojan Horse, which was supposed to be a gift. Now, as you well know, the term has come to refer to computer programs that trick you into thinking they do one thing, but they actually do another thing ... and usually that thing is install a virus and make you part of a giant botnet. Thanks, ancient Greeks! On this date in 1967, Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov died in Soyuz 1, after his parachute failed to open. Komarov was the first Soviet cosmonaut to travel into space more than once and he was also the first human to die during a space mission. The asteroid '1836 Komarov,' which was discovered in 1971, is named after him, and so is a crater on the Moon. In other space news, in 1970, the Chinese launched their first satellite, the Dong Fang Hong 1. I am quite certain that is not how you say that. And finally, in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was launched by the Space Shuttle Discovery. It was, in sum, a pretty big day for space news.
