TDK Three-Speaker Boombox Video Transcript

Hey, I'm Donald Bell. And today, I'm going to give you a First Look at the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox. This is a boombox [unk] classic 80's tradition. And true to its name, it has 3 speakers. You get 2 10-watt speakers on the side, and dedicated 15-watt subwoofer right in the middle. Another cool thing to notice here is that you get dedicated tweeters that are suspended in the left and right hand drivers, which are gonna give you better fidelity than you're used to hearing from a lot of portable speakers out there. Of course, at $499, this thing really should sound good. You get spoil-on features, too. You get AM FM radio, iPod and iPhone support. You'll also get tons of auxiliary input support, it's RCA input, mini-jack input and even an instrument input for plugging in a microphone or a guitar. You can even blend the instrument input with the iPod or your FM radio if you wanna have some crazy karaoke party. But what I really love about this thing is the design details. You get this nice oversized handle that's made from a single, solid piece of aluminum. On the bottom of that, you got this cushy leather padding. Both the dials here are metal, too. And the speakers, even though they're exposed, they're all made out of a woven carbon fiber that should stand up to wear and tear over time. So, there is some bad news. There's no actual iPod dock on here, so if you're gonna connect up your iPhone or your iPod, you're gonna need to do that over a cable, maybe keep it up top or invest in a dock that's gonna sit alongside it. There's no remote control. This thing's heavy as hell. And if you really wanna use the AM and FM radio, you're gonna need to connect up these antenna leads to the back. Still, this thing turns heads and it sounds great. For CNET.com, I'm Donald Bell and that was a First Look at the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox.

TDK Three Speaker Boombox Review

The good: The TDK Three Speaker Boombox delivers a finely tuned, powerful sound in a portable system with an unforgettable design. Features such as AM/FM radio, as well as RCA and instrument input, set it apart from the competition.

The bad: There's no way to secure your iPod/iPhone or other connected device; support for Bluetooth is absent; radio antennas are handled by two dangling wires; no remote; hefty weight and battery-hungry design make portability impractical.

The bottom line: TDK's Three Speaker Boombox is as beautiful as it is powerful, but the hefty design does not travel well.
