A tablet, a desktop: The Asus Transformer AIO Video Transcript

Hi. I'm Rich Brown for CNET. We're here at Digital Experience at CES. We're at the Asus booth and here we've got the Asus Transformer AIO. It has this unique system you haven't seen before. It's a tablet and desktop hybrid. So, right here is an 18.4-inch display, it's 19 by 10 and it is a touchscreen and you can see here it's showing Windows 8. If I lift it up off the stand here, you'll see we get the screen, now, we do announce it to run Windows here on here, normally, that's a bug they're working through right now but here I hit the Android home button and it takes you back to the Android screen. So, there's a Tegra 3 chip in here running Android's Jellybean operating system. Plug it back in now and it goes back to Windows 8 with this button here on the side. Asus isn't talking about when is this will be available or the battery life of the tablet, so we still have some details we need to learn. Overall though, this is kind of a trend we're seeing lately but companies trying to merge tablets and laptops and desktops in a different configurations. We're gonna sort of bridge the gap between mobile, windows, Windows RT and all kinds of different operating system and devices. So the tablet also has a stand in the back, covers pretty easily. Sense of like that is pretty convenient. Overall, though, this doesn't speak to a trend we're seeing with companies merging laptops, desktop, tablets and all kinds of different configurations. I'm Rich Brown. This is the Asus Transformer AIO.

Asus Transformer AIO: Two devices in one

It's not the most elegant design, but by offering a Windows 8 PC and a large Android tablet in one device, the Asus Transformer AIO can satisfy the computing needs of multiple users in a single household.

Asus Transformer AIO Review

The good: The Asus Transformer AIO delivers a fast Windows 8 all-in-one, a giant Android tablet, and an effective platform for using them in tandem.

The bad: Remote desktop technology makes using Windows 8 in tablet mode unreliable, and you might prefer to wait to buy until later this year when the category has matured.

The bottom line: You'd be smart to wait and see how the market develops, but Asus has used the freedom of the still-forming all-in-one/tablet hybrid category to create a compelling Windows 8/Android device in the Transformer AIO.
