Synology DS209+ NAS server Video Transcript

>> Dong: Hello, this is Dong Wo [assumed spelling] for CNET.com and I have with me today the DS209 Plus Nav Server from Synology. The DS209 Plus features 2 USB ports and a VIB Internet port on the back and a big that worked rather quietly. On the front there's another USB port; this port apart from having the same function as the ones on the back can also be used to copy an entire content of a thumb drive via this button. There's also an [inaudible] port that offer high-speed connection to another external storage device. The DS209 Plus doesn't come with any storage but it can house 2 [inaudible] hard drives of any capacity. In addition it also has great configurations and by-far the fastest throughput speed we've ever seen in a nav server. Among many other things it can even be configured to support up to 10 IP cameras to make up a complete surveillance system. The device unfortunately is not very easy for a novice user to set up and most of all it's not cheap, it costs $500 without any storage. If you are a savvy user, however, this is possibly the best nav server you can get for your home or small office. For more information on the product check out the full review at CNET.com. Again my name is Dong Wo and this has been the first look at the DS209 Plus Nav Server from Synology. ^M00:01:27 [ Music ]

Synology DS209+ NAS server Review

The good: Very fast throughput; loads of features; robust and intuitive Web interface; RAID 1 and RAID 0 support; great expandability; Download Station supports eMule, BitTorrent and Web sites that require authentication.

The bad: Requires some networking knowhow to use and take advantage of its advanced features; Surveillance Station supports only one camera out of the box; eSATA port located on the front; requires a tool to install hard drives; expensive.

The bottom line: Although expensive and difficult to use for networking novices, the Synology DS209+ offers awesome throughput speed and nearly all the features you could ever need in a NAS server.
