>> Hello, welcome back to NAS first look. My name is Dong Ngo, and today I have with me the DiskStation DS710+ from Synology. This is a two-bay NAS server, meaning it can host two hard drives. However, it can work with an expansion unit called DX510 to host up to seven hard drives. The DX510 is not available for this video, but it will be for purchase later this month. The DS710+ has a few improvements over other dual-bay NAS servers from the same company. First, it's now much easier to use with the hard drives. [Inaudible], you buy two drive bays that can be can be accessed via a latch. You can [inaudible] or replace a hard drive this way within a matter of a few seconds. The DS710+ comes with three USB ports: one on the front and two on the back. These ports can be used to host more storage or printers. The front port here also works for the server's quick backup features. Stick a thumb drive in here and press the button to back it up. There's also an eSATA port on the back for use with high-speed storage devices such as a DX510 expansion unit mentioned earlier. Like all NAS servers from Synology, the DS710+ has an excellent web interface and comes with a vast amount of features. One of the best features is the surveillance station which is [inaudible] and supports up to 15 IP cameras. Unfortunately, only one camera license is included, and you'd have to pay about $50 to add another. The NAS server performed excellently in our testing and is one of the fastest dual-bay NAS servers to date. For this reason, it's not cheap, costing around $550 without storage. Although expensive and difficult to use for networking novices, the Synology DS209+ offers awesome throughput speed and nearly all the features you could ever need in a NAS server.
The Canon Pixma MP780 is well suited for home offices or businesses small enough to get by without a networked multifunction printer.
The TeraStation is an inexpensive, network-attached RAID storage option that would be great for a small or home office.
Synology Disk Station DS710+ Review
The good: The Synology Disk Station DS710+ offers excellent throughput speed, a vast amount of features, and a state-of-the-art Web interface. It also has the option to expand the internal storage up to seven hard drives.
The bad: The Synology Disk Station DS710+ doesn't have dual Ethernet and requires licenses to support more than one IP camera. Its setup application is rather confusing, and only savvy tech users can take advantage of its advanced features. It's also expensive, and the hard-drive expansion solution is clunky.
The bottom line: For those who possess decent networking know-how, the Synology Disk Station DS710+ makes an excellent NAS server for any environment. It's best suited for home office and small-business applications.
