Hey, I'm Donald Bell and today we're taking a first look at the Soundfreaq Sound Step. This is a low profile speaker dock that retails for $139 or $159 if you want one that can run from an internal rechargeable battery. Soundfreaq first caught our attention in 2010 with the Sound Platform which combine great sound and design with features like Bluetooth audio and a remote control. One thing it couldn't do though is dock with the iPad. Now, the Sound Step fixes that problem with a dock design that works for the iPad, the iPhone, or the iPad Touch. It also includes an FM radio. Though, you'll need to download a free app in order to switch it on and tune it in. On the front here, you have buttons for the one EQ preset along with mode buttons, a Bluetooth pang button, track and volume controls, and a power button. On the back, you have a USB charging port for any none Apple gadgets along with the video output, ox in, and a socket for the FM antenna wire which is one of these floppy deals You also notice a space here for the dedicated woofer which would lead you to think that this thing has a big sound for its size. It doesn't unfortunately and that's the real tragedy here. With great features, thin sound. If you can't live without the iPad docking feature and then some of the other features, Soundfreaq's Original Speakers are better option in terms of sound quality and its street price is right around that $150 range. That's it if you're really looking for an attractive place to charge your iPad and other gadgets and play the occasional tune, the Sound Step can certainly feel that roll. Soundfreaq Sound Step Review
The good: The Soundfreaq Sound Step throws in a little bit of everything with its low-profile, modern look, wireless Bluetooth audio, video out, USB charge port, remote control, FM radio, and compatibility with Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod.
The bad: Sound is thin and lifeless, and the FM radio tuner requires an app interface to operate.
The bottom line: The Soundfreaq Sound Step offers everything you'd want in an all-in-one speaker dock, except great sound.
