Sony VAIO VGF-WA1 Wireless Music Streamer Video Transcript

>> Hi, I'm Matthew Moskovciak, Associate Editor at CNET.com and this is the Sony VGF-WA1. Now, Sony calls this a wireless music streamer, but what you can think of it is like a tabletop radio except for getting music over AM and FM, this takes music off of your computer that's connected to a wireless network. It can also do internet radio, so basically all of your music is streamed over a Wi-Fi network. Now, as you can see the design is pretty stylish. It's got a nice grill on the front and on the top it has touch sensitive buttons that light up. One thing that is nice is that they include a Wi-Fi adaptor. This is good because if you don't have a Wi-Fi network at home, you'll still be able to stream music from your PC to the Sony player. Sony also includes a remote with this product, but we found that we didn't use it that often. The reason is because the screen on the player is actually on the top of the unit, so if you're far away, you wont really be able to see it if you're scrolling through artists. Another nice feature is around back, there's a handle on the product. Now this is pretty good just for moving it around but another nice thing is that this has a battery built-in to it, so you can unplug it, carry it and bring it around to the deck or outside, anywhere you want to. Now, obviously if you're outside, you may not be able to access the Wi-Fi network. Well, another nice thing is that you can actually download tracks from your PC to the internal memory of the Sony unit. Now, there's not that much memory, there's only 128 MB, which is something that we didn't like about the player, but still if you just wanna have a couple of tracks to take out to the backyard that doesn't have a Wi-Fi connection, it's kinda nice. Moving out to performance, we found out that the sound quality was pretty good for a tabletop radio. Obviously, it's not gonna sound like a larger system, but just for listening in the kitchen or on the deck, it certainly suits the purpose. I'm Matt Moskovciak at CNET.com and this is the Sony VGF-WA1.

Sony VGF-WA1 (white) Review

The good: Reliable wireless audio streaming; stylish design; built-in lithium battery with 4 hours of battery life; solid connectivity, including a digital-audio output and an auxiliary minijack input for external sources.

The bad: Limited (128MB) internal memory; no method of adding additional memory; AAC downloads are very slow; no Mac support; no AM/FM tuner; limited file format support; can't handle subscription-based digital music services.

The bottom line: The Sony VAIO VGF-WA1 is a stylish tabletop radio that can stream digital music from your PC, but a few key feature upgrades would have made us like it even more.
