>> Hi. I'm Scott Stein, Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com. And this is the Sony Vaio NW160J laptop. Now, Blu-ray playing is getting increasingly popular across high-end to midrange portable computers. And the Sony Vaios are generally some of the best machines to play Blu-rays. This 160J model has Blu-ray inside of it, and it comes in at 929, which is not bad, although, of course, there are cheaper laptops out there in the 15.5-inch range. On the other hand, the NW160J also has ATI mobility radion graphics, 512 megabytes worth of it. So this can actually play games at a pretty decent clip. This Sony Vaio runs an Intel Core2 Duo processor, running at a decent speed. And it has 320 gigs of hard drive space and four gigs of RAM. So why get this over laptops in its range? Well, again, we said the Blu-ray, the video graphics, and also, in addition, the keyboard and the trackpad are fantastic on this machine. We found that they were some of the best responding of any of the ones in its range. It's a widely spaced keyboard with nice, raised keys, and the trackpad is recessed and has a great feel to it. So if you're a writer, take a look at this model. It also has mini FireWire, which is not often seen in laptops of this range. And it also has HDMI out, in addition to USB ports, and of course, a memory card reader, in addition to the memory stick format reader. Now, while the screen is not a 1080p screen -- it plays at around a 720p plus resolution -- it plays Blu-rays great. And the speakers, while they are a little bit underpowered, still work fine for us. While there are other midrange laptops that do cost several hundred dollars cheaper, the overall combination of looks and performance in this laptop puts it a little step above the rest, and we recommend it. I'm Scott Stein, and this is the Sony Vaio NW160J. ^M00:01:52 [ Music ]

Editors' rating

The good: Blu-ray drive for less than $1,000; discrete graphics; excellent keyboard and touch pad; attractive design.

The bad: Lacks top-of-the-line Core 2 Duo processor; mediocre speakers.

The bottom line: Although it's expensive for a 15-inch multimedia laptop, the Blu-ray and game-playing capabilities of the attractive 15.4-inch Sony Vaio NW160J make it a worthy portable entertainment system.
