>> Hi. I'm Matthew Moskovciak, Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com and this is the Sony STR-DG920. This is a AV receiver in the middle of Sony's lineup and the most notable thing about this is that it has a graphical user interface. Now, we've seen that on the step up ES line, but this is one of the first midrange receivers we've seen to have a graphical user interface instead of a text-based interface. Now, what this mostly does is it means it looks a little bit nicer when you're selecting inputs and setting up your receiver on an HD TV compared to the blocky VCR style text that you'll see on other receivers. Now, like most receivers in this price range it has onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Now, on the downside the Sony lacks multiroom support, which is pretty much a standard feature at this price class. Now, if you're only going to use the receiver in just say, your home theater that's not a big deal, but if you have a more elaborate setup you're going to have to look somewhere else. The other aspect that we found the Sony was a little lacking was in sound quality. If you flip it around back you'll also see there are four HDMI inputs which is about the most you're going to find at this price range. Now, there's also an HDMI output and the DG920 can up convert analog signals up to 1080p over that output and the video quality was actually pretty good for an AV receiver. However, with the four HDMI inputs and the graphical user interface, we felt that this is one of the top picks in the midrange AV receiver price class. The good: Four HDMI inputs; basic graphical user interface; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; XM-ready; upconverts analog signals to 1080p over HDMI output with good quality; automatic speaker calibration.
The bad: No multiroom functionality; no S-Video inputs; sound quality a bit below some competitors; some minor video scaling issues.
The bottom line: Sony's STR-DG920 is a standout midrange AV receiver, with a basic graphical user interface, four HDMI inputs, and solid video processing.
