>> Hi. I'm Bonnie Cha, senior editor at CNET.com and today we're taking a First Look at the Sony Mylo Communicator 2. This is a wireless handheld, basically targeted at around 14 to 22 year olds. It's got some nice stuff for that age group. It's got IM. It's got some popular clients like Yahoo and AIM. And it's also got a great web browser with support for social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. It's also got a media player for videos and music as well. And also, now you've got a 1.3 megapixel camera on the back. It doesn't record video at this time, but this is a nice addition, so... Overall it's a really good improvement over the first Mylo, but I have some major reservations about this handheld. It doesn't have cellular technology. You can VOIP calls, but you can't make cellular calls, and I just don't really see a reason for this kind of device right now. It's $300.00, and for that price you can get, you know, a Helio Ocean or a Sidekick. So I think, you know, that's the better way to go. You're gonna get more for your money. The band released only three singles in the last year - but these 12inches caused a good buzz and heavy rotations with DJ's all over the place. Especially the single SPACE FOR RENT (and The Rapture's remix of it) is currently getting a huge response (Leftfield single of the issue in DJ mag), and their cover version of Benny Benassi's Satisfaction is still a hit in many clubs. The album?s second single OUT THE DOOR was remixed by French producers IN FLAGRANTI and SUPERDISCOUNT and has been getting good exposure in clubs worldwide. Sony's midrange AV receiver improves on its predecessor with new HDMI features like standby pass-through and 3D compatibility, but it lacks a compelling reason to pick it over its competitors.
The Helio Ocean is a triple-deckered phone with a numeric keypad layer that slides down, and a QWERTY keyboard layer that slides sideways.
With the new features, extra level of customization, and affordable price tag, the T-Mobile Sidekick is a good choice for the carrier's younger customers looking for an all-in-one communication device.
Sony Mylo 2 (black) Review
The good: The Sony Mylo Communicator 2 has a more refined design and now includes a 1.3-megapixel camera, AIM integration, widget support, and direct downloads/uploads.
The bad: The Mylo COM2 relies only on a Wi-Fi connection; there is no cellular or Bluetooth technology. The handheld can be sluggish, and the camera doesn't record video at this time.
The bottom line: The Sony Mylo Communicator 2 is a huge improvement over its predecessor, but the Wi-Fi handheld will have a hard time competing with the similarly priced and better featured iPhones, Sidekicks, and Helio Oceans of the cellular world.
