Sony HW50ES projector is a movie great Video Transcript

Hi. I'm Ty Pendlebury from CNET, and this is a look at the Sony VPL-HW50ES projector. If you are looking for a model for a dedicated home cinema, there are a few options available to you. While you may think of Sony as mainly a TV manufacturer, its HW50ES projector sure put it in contention. This is not a cheap projector. At $4,000, it's more expensive than most TVs. But the images it is capable of, more than return on the investment. As far as higher-end projectors go, it's still fairly large, but it's also quite attractive in a monolithic type of way. We pitted this projector against the JVC DLA-X35, and there's very little to separate them in terms of picture quality. But the most obvious difference was in the number of accessories that were bundled with it. The Sony includes two pairs of 3D glasses, while the JVC doesn't. And you also get an extra lamp, which saves you an extra 300 bucks. And now, the positive in the Sony's favor is that it's easy to set up with the Manual Lens Shift controls. Also, you just set it in to Reference Mode, and you'll get a very cinematic picture. Black levels, shadow detail, and colors are superb. And it gives most televisions a run for their money, especially when you consider that 100-inch TV will cost you ten times worth this projector and a good screen would. While it would be difficult to pick between the Sony HW50ES and the JVC X35, they are both stunning projectors and well worth the money. This has been Ty Pendlebury for CNET.

Sony VPL-HW50ES Review

The good: The Sony VPL-HW50ES projector produces huge images with excellent black levels, full shadow detail, and reference-quality colors; very good value for this level of image quality; highly accurate picture is available using preset picture modes; lots of setup options; quiet even at full lamp power; extra lamp and two pairs of 3D glasses bundled with projector.

The bad: Somewhat more expensive than the comparably performing JVC DLA-X35; focus, zoom and lens shift aren't remote controlled; won't work with standard-compliant third-party 3D glasses.

The bottom line: The Sony VPL-HW50ES costs more than most TVs, but for a fantastic big-screen cinema experience in the home it's a very good value.
