>> Hi, I'm Lori Grunin, senior editor with CNET.com. And this is a Sony HDRFX7. The FX7 is Sony's most recent entry into its Prosumer HDV product line. And they've taken some of the things that they've learned from its predecessor, the FX1 to turn it into a better but kind of more confusing camcorder. It has a 20x zoom lens, which is something that really you only see as a marketing gimmick on consumer camcorders. It has this same servo controller rings on lens. It's got a very nice built in lens cover. However, the lens cover is built in to the lens shade. It doesn't come with another lens cap. So they moved some of the features into the menu system and left you with six assignable buttons that you can use to choose which features you find are most important. As far as connectors, you've got a memory stick duo slot, USB jacks, that's for transferring settings, not for copying off stills. And an HDMI out. Over here, you have your component video, AV for composite out and fire wire. One of the more disappointing aspects of the camcorder is its audio support. There are no XLR inputs and you can't even independently control the left and right channels of the audio. The video quality is excellent. It's sharp, the colors are good. And it handles low light situations pretty well. It's not quite powerful enough for the entry level professional and it's not quite focused enough for the consumer. It's too bad that this camcorder will probably have trouble finding its market. I'm Lori Grunin and this is the Sony Handi Cam HDRFX7. ^M00:01:56 [ Music ]

Sony Handycam HDR-FX7 Review

The good: Excellent overall video quality; responsive focus and zoom.

The bad: Menu navigation doesn't circle back; useless manual; anemic audio support.

The bottom line: The Sony Handycam HDR-FX7 is an excellent high-definition camcorder from a video perspective, but it's less satisfying if you're an audio control freak.
