>> Hello, I'm Phil Ryan senior editor cnet.com and we're taking a look at the Sony Handycam HDR CX7. The CX7 doesn't record it's videos to tape, doesn't have a hard drive and obviously doesn't have a DVD drive. It records all its video to Sony's little memory stick duo cards. It's interesting because it's AVC HD camcorder it records high definition video directly onto the card. Thankfully, the image quality is pretty nice. We liked the video that we got from it everything was pretty good. The small design is a little awkward you end up with the camera at a little bit of an odd angle. You really have to grip it to bring it into where you want it to be. It has pretty good stills for a camcorder. We're impressed you could make prints from it maybe even up to letter size depending on the situation. Ultimately, this is probably best for people who want high quality high def video, but don't want to fiddle with controls. They want to use the automatic settings almost all the time. If you want to add, anything the top has a little hot shoe on it so you can add a microphone or a video light and it should be pretty easy to use. I'm Phil Ryan and this is the Sony Handycam HDR CX7. You can tell where Sony cut corners on this compact, flash-based HD camcorder. While it's decent, there are better options for the money than the Sony Handycam HDR-CX100.

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 seems overpriced for hard-drive-based video recording, especially considering its mediocre video quality.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR100

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR100 is a solid hard drive-based option, especially if you like Sony's touch-screen interfaces.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR80

Sony's Handycam DCR-SR80 is a respectable hard-drive-based camcorder if you don't mind its touch-screen interface.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR40

Sony's DCR-SR40 is a solid, midlevel, hard drive-based option, though still-image buffs won't be impressed with this camcorder's submegapixel snapshots.

Sony Handycam HDR-XR500V

Though their geotagging capabilities are mostly novelty and their interfaces could use a complete overhaul, the top-notch video quality, performance, and consumer-friendly feature sets of the Sony Handycam HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR520V make them worthy camcorder options. Both are overpriced, but since 14 hours of recording time is plenty--especially if supplemented with flash media--the HDR-XR500V is the better deal of the two.

Sony Handycam HDR-CX7 Review

The good: Excellent video and performance; impressive still photos for a camcorder; adequate manual controls; docking station included.

The bad: No wind filter; USB on dock only, not on camcorder; doesn't include Mini HDMI cable; no viewfinder.

The bottom line: As the flash-memory-based equivalent of the HDR-SR7, the Sony Handycam HDR-CX7 serves up the same pleasing performance and quality as its hard-drive cousin.
