>> Hi Lori Grunin senior editor with CNET.com and this is Sony Handy cam DSR SR42. This is the baby of Sony's hard drive camcorder line. And as such it's small, cheap, and has fairly mediocre video. From a design standpoint it's really nice. It fits very comfortably, it's fairly compact it's got a nice ridge for you to put your fingers on. It's got a tiny LCD but you get what you pay for. It's got a memory stick duo slot incase you feel the urge to shoot really low resolution stills with this camcorder. It has extremely basic controls on, off, zoom, photo, and night shot, which is find for a low end model. The 40X zoom lens has a built in lens cap which is very nice. You can store a lot of video on the hard drive and that tends to be the main attraction of these models. And if all you're looking to shoot is YouTube quality video then that's pretty much what you get out of this. however, remember when you plunk down your money do you really still wanna be shooting YouTube quality video next year when everybody's moved on to a slightly better quality? I'm Lori Grunin and this has been the Sony Handy cam DSR SR42. ^M00:01:16 [ Music ]

Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 Review

The good: Compact and lightweight; large storage capacity; bundled dock; built-in lens cover.

The bad: Mediocre video and still photo quality; no wind filter; small, fingerprint-magnet touch screen LCD; software free for Windows but $100 for Mac.

The bottom line: Given its mediocre video quality, the Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 seems overpriced for what it delivers.
