>> Hi. I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today, we'll take a first look at the Sony Ericsson TM506. This is a new phone for T-Mobile service. This is the first 3G phone that T-Mobile has launched. Did like the design. It's kinda simple, a little bit minimalized but pretty attractive. I like the slim shape of the phone, has a nice feel on the hand. It's lightweight. The only thing I wasn't crazy about on the design was this external display. It's pretty small. It's rectangular. It's monochrome so it means there's no photo caller ID. It also means there's no Viewfinder for the camera so it's a part that's a little tricky. The phone is black all round. This is called Amber though and you can seen an amber ring right here and there's a couple of amber touches inside as well. Inside the phone, up to the usual Sony Ericsson standard, it's very bright. It's colorful and then user easy to navigate, standard Sony Ericsson design. Using the icons, you could just scroll around and select whatever you like. Keypad and navigation control has a little bit unique design. Keypad buttons have an overlapping circle design. You can see more the amber touches here. Also, the backlighting is pretty dim. Besides its 3G services, this phone just has assisted GPS through TeleNavs. You can get local maps and traffic and you can also geotag your photos with the 2 mega pixel camera. Stereo Bluetooth, have a music player, messaging, and organizer features as well. The only thing I was disappointed by is that the phone is only triband GSM. That will give you service in other areas outside North America but we really quad band for the most complete coverage overall. I'm Kent German and this is the Sony Ericsson TM506. ^M00:01:31 [ Music ]

Editors' rating

The good: The Sony Ericsson TM506 has a sleek, easy-to-use design with a brilliant display. Its functional feature set includes world 3G support, a camera, a music player, and Assisted GPS.

The bad: The Sony Ericsson TM506's external display is small with limited functionality. It supports only three GSM bands and the speakerphone quality is mediocre.

The bottom line: The Sony Ericsson TM506 has a couple of faults, but it's broad 3G support and integrated GPS makes it a welcome addition to T-Mobile's lineup.
