>> Hi. I'm Lori Grunin, senior editor with CNET, and this is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3. I was quite excited when I first heard about the G3 because, in theory, it has a more robust implementation for Wi-Fi uploading your images. However, after testing it I've decided that a lot of people will probably feel that the implementation is still a little rocky and more effort than it's worth. Part of the issue stems from the Sony's touchscreen, which makes navigating all of the various menus and things that you have to do for a wireless upload kind of difficult. And the other thing is that uploading is hugely battery draining. On the inside the G3 is basically the same as the T700. It's got a 10-megapixel sensor and 4X internally zooming lens. The design, however, is different, and frankly I don't like it as much. You have to be careful to slide the front part all the way open to make sure that the camera is on. Once it's open, it's very long. Thankfully, it does have a zoom control instead of forcing you to use the touchscreen as a zoom control. The buttons are unnecessarily small. There's a tiny WLAN; that's for starting the Wi-Fi, tiny power, shutter button's okay, and a tiny playback button. The camera does have a very nice 3.5-inch LDC, although since it shoots 4:3 aspect photos, it uses the outer edges for navigation for the touchscreen. Another thing, and this is a big problem with all compact cameras of this design, is you have to be really careful not to put your fingers over the lens when you're shooting. The image quality is okay. It's about as good as the T700. And performance is actually kind of zippy for its class, but because of the Wi-Fi, you end up paying more than you really need to for, essentially, a 10-megapixel, 4X zoom camera. If you want to be on the cutting edge, this is the Wi-Fi camera to have, but if you really don't like hassling with stuff, then you probably want to avoid it. Part smart-looking snapshot camera, part 4GB portable digital photo album, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 will satisfy those who like showing off their pictures as much as they like taking them.
Although the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 features improvements over its T7 sibling, as well as much better value, its image quality still doesn't match the camera's other attributes.
If you don't mind its extra bulk and narrow lens, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is an otherwise excellent compact megazoom camera.
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 Review
The good: Surprisingly speedy; 4GB internal memory.
The bad: Wi-Fi is slow and difficult to use; touch screen is occasionally nonresponsive; poor battery life.
The bottom line: Though it's a decent camera, the Sony Cyber-shot G3's Wi-Fi implementation is a disappointment, and makes the camera overpriced relative to nonwireless models, including its better designed but otherwise similar sibling, the DSC-T700.
