Sony BDV-E770W Video Transcript

Hi I'm Matthew Moskovciak senior associate editor at cnet.com. And we're here with the Sony -- DV. 770 W. This is a home theater in a box system with a built in Blu-ray player and it's currently selling for about 650 dollars online. The BD VE 770 W includes a five point one speaker system. With four identical front and rear speakers center channel and a subwoofer. It also comes with a wireless rear speaker kit so you won't need to run wires from the front of your home theater all the way to the back. The main unit houses -- that AV receiver. And the built in Blu-ray player plus up front there's a USB port so you can directly -- an iPod or iPhone to listen to your music collection. The on screen menus use a version of Sony's familiar X and B graphical user interface. Here you get access to all of the streaming media services available on the system including Netflix Amazon video on demand pandora and slacker. The system also comes with a Wi-Fi USB dongle so you won't need to run an ethernet cable to your living room. While we like the inclusion of Wi-Fi the dongle does seem like extra clutter when you consider that other systems have Wi-Fi built in. On the back of the main unit are the connectivity options and this is the DD BE 770 w.'s biggest weakness. Unlike most competing systems in this price range there are no HDMI inputs. That means you'll need to make a video connection to your TV and an audio connection to your receiver. The system does have to digital audio inputs and an analog audio and -- so you can connect three total external devices. In terms of the built in Blu-ray player image quality is very good although it's a slight step behind from some of the best standalone Blu-ray players we've tested. On the outside disc loading speeds are good. Coming in considerably faster than the competing Samsung HTC 6500. It's also one of the few blu -- -- -- -- 3-D compatible with the latest firmware update now -- quality was excellent overall especially considering. This is a home theater in a box systems it comes in just slightly behind the competing Samsung. Included subwoofer is relatively large for a system like this which really helps deliver -- powerful sound on movies. Two channel music didn't sound quite as good but that's the case with most all in one systems. Altogether the Sony BD VE 770 W is one of the best Blu-ray Home Theater Systems we've tested with excellent sound quality. Tons of streaming media options 3-D compatibility. And wireless rear speakers but the lack of -- in my -- puts will likely be a major sticking point for many buyers. I'm Matthew Moskovciak from cnet.com and this is the Sony BD VE 770 W.

Sony BDV-E770W Review

The good: A 5.1 home theater system with built-in Blu-ray player; excellent sound quality for a home-theater-in-a-box system; Netflix, Amazon VOD, YouTube, Pandora, and Slacker media streaming; DLNA streaming of PC-based media; wireless rear speakers; Wi-Fi with included USB dongle; can connect iPod through USB port; 3D compatible; relatively speedy Blu-ray load times.

The bad: No HDMI inputs; required USB dongle for Wi-Fi is a hassle compared with other units; only three external devices can be connected at once.

The bottom line: The Sony BDV-E770W is one of the best Blu-ray home theater systems we've tested, with excellent sound quality, tons of streaming-media options, 3D compatibility, and wireless rear speakers. The lack of HDMI inputs is the only big omission.
