>> Hi I'm Kent German, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we'll take a first look at the Sonim XP3 Quest. This is a cellphone unlike many others. It is advertised as one of the most durable cellphones in the world. Sonim is a company that only makes this phone, and as you can see it's really padded and a lot of rubber, certainly unusual, kind of ugly I would say, but has all this rubber on this side. You'll see that the back has screws actually that put in the battery cover. That's to keep the phone completely dry, because you can submerge it in water. So if a person happens to drop the phone in the water, I know a lot of people drop the phone in the toilet, the phone should stand up to that. On the bottom you also see there's a big rubber port that covers the charger port and the headset jack that snaps on securely to keep the water out of there. Just a couple of specs quickly - it does have a 2 megapixel camera, a flashlight as well, does have GPS, it does have turn by turn directions in it, and has organizer features - a speaker phone and everything else you might imagine on a phone of this quality. Sonim did send me a few things to show you just how strong the phone is. They do say you can use the phone as a hammer to put a nail in some wood, so we're going to try that right now. Just put the nail like this. ^m00:01:03 [ Hammering ] ^m00:01:06 And it looks like that does work. Of course this is kind of a soft wood that the nail is going all the way in. They do say the phone is water proof, so we're going to show you that. Have a nice tank of water here. Just drop it in. And there you go. So now that the phone is in the water, we'll try calling it. ^m00:01:21 [ Ringing ] ^m00:01:24 There you go. So you can hear the phone ringing. We'll just take it out of there. See the call's registering on the screen. And we'll press talk, and the phone is connected. Sonim does have the video on their site that shows the phone being subjected to a lot of tests. One thing they show is... the toughest of the screens, so we'll take 1 of these nails... just put it in. ^m00:01:43 [ Hammering ] ^m00:01:47 Not even a scratch on that display. It's very strong. But we're going to subject this to a few tests to show you if they can really stand up to what Sonim says they can. Let's get down and put it to the test. ^m00:01:58 Sonim's certified to drop to a concrete floor from several meters. As you can see I'm 1 floor up, and I'm going to drop the phone now. ^m00:02:04 [ Hits the floor ] ^m00:02:07 So you pick up the phone, you can see the display's still working. There is a notice that says insert SIM, so probably the SIM card might be loose from the fall, but has survived that fall. For another impact testing, I'm going to roll the Sonim down these concrete stairs. Just take it and give it a good toss... ^m00:02:22 [ Rolling down stairs ] ^m00:02:24 ... grab the phone, and flick on the display, and does appear to be working. For our last testing, I'm going to put the phone on the ground, put this box on top of it, and stand on the box. So put the phone there... just [banging] and stand on top. So rock back and forth just a little bit maybe... and see what happens. ^m00:02:49 There you go. Phone's still working. Besides the tests that I performed, the phone is built to withstand high temperatures. You can put it in a freezer, you can put it next to a heater and it's supposed to survive. And like a lot of Nextel phones, it is built to military specifications for things like dust, shock, and vibration. True to it's Sonim promise, the XP3 Quest did withstand all of the stuff that we've thrown at it, so definitely a strong phone. I'm Kent German for CNET.com. This is the Sonim XP3 Quest. ^m00:03:16 [ Music ] ^m00:03:20 [ Banging ]

Sonim XP3 Quest (unlocked) Review
The good: The Sonim XP3 is extremely rugged and durable. It offers GPS support and decent call quality.
The bad: The Sonim XP3 lacks multimedia messaging. Speakerphone calls were average.
The bottom line: We're astounded by the lack of multimedia messaging, but the Sonim XP3 Quest should withstand most torture tests.
